The Peel group is a massive company which has its fingers in a lot of pies in the North West:

Peel Airports own and operate: Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster, Durham Tees Valley Airport, City Airport Manchester.

Ports, Docks, Canals, Harbours:
Port of Liverpool, Manchester Ship Canal, Medway Ports Kent, Clydeport Scotland, Heysham Port Lancashire, Liverpool and Birkenhead Docks, Glasgow Harbour, The Bridgewater Canal, Gloucester Quays

Utilities – Peel Utilities own and operate utilities infrastructure – water and electricity networks

Shopping Centres – Peel are big on consumerism they own The Trafford Centre, Manchester

Hotels – Peel Leisure currently own six hotels across the North West which are run by third party operators, such hotels include the Marriott at Worsley and Crowne Plaza Liverpool.

The Media – MediaCityUK – soon to be home of the BBC

Energy – Peel Energy claims to “have a balanced portfolio” with 450MW worth of onshore wind projects and plans sometime in the future to maybe have tidal and biomass. Peel Energy is also developing Carbon capture and storage (CCS) with DONG Energy. CCS is a techno-fix where we carry on burning as much coal as we like but store the CO2 under ground. However its still in the experimental stage, we have no way of knowing if the CO2 will leak back to the surface, it doesn’t tackle the underlying issue of over consumption and will be used mainly for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). EOR is where captured CO2 is pumped into aging oil wells in order to obtain as much oil as possible – resulting in even more CO2 being released.

Peel is now the sole financier of the Hunterston Coal-Fired Power Station after DONG energy pulled out of its 50% sake in Aryshire Power.  And of course Peel is the major investor in UK Coal the UK’s largest coal mining company and is expected to put in a take-over bid to control all of Scotland’s coal ports.
